Renewable Energy

Sustain 2001

The World Sustainable Energy Exhibition and Conference,
8-10 May 2001

Sustain 2001 will be held at Amsterdam’s RAI Congress Center, one of Europe’s foremost
venues for major international events. The overall theme of both the exhibition and
conference is generating, selling, and buying clean and reliable energy in a competitive
market. According to its organizers, Sustain 2001 is the world’s largest clean energy forum.

Sustain 2001 is supported by the European Commssion.  The EC launched a program
to promote the use of sustainable energy and sees the conference as a partner for the transfer
of the requisite knowledge and information.  NOVEM, the Netherlands Agency for Energy
and the Environment, is sponsoring the event.  Novem’s mission is to stimulate the sustainable
development of society in regard to energy and the environment, both in the Netherlands and
internationally.  Sustain 2001 has also the support of Cogen Europe, the umbrella organization
for all institutions and companies involved in the combined generation of energy and power
(CHP).

J.B.V.N. Pleumeekers, Managing Director of Novem, will chair the conference and give
the welcome address on 8 May.  Speakers during the opening session include representatives
of the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs, the European Commission, the International Energy
Agency in Paris, and Shell International.

Conference delegates will be able to attend paper presentations, panel discussions, and open
exchanges in the fields of Green Power, Building Systems, and Marketing.  Speakers from
all over the world will present their expertise on topics including green energy in its various
forms, solar and thermal applications in buildings, new business and investment opportunities,
the Kyoto protocol.  The conference’s closing session will draw conclusions and look ahead
to future developments, challenges, and market possibilities.

Concurrently with the conference will be held the energy exhibition, featuring more than
200 exhibitors from all over the world.  The exhibition is subdivided into the sections Wind,
Biomass, Solar Heating and Photovoltaic, Energy Efficiency, Sustainable Energy,
New Technologies, and Finance and Consulting.

The exhibition will further divide exhibitors into country pavilions.  Companies working
in the same field will present their services and products together.  At the Holland Solar
Pavillion, for example, various Dutch companies will display products and services that
offer comprehensive energy provision based on solar energy.

The Chinese Pavilion will showcase ten Chinese companies. According to Mrs L. Hua
of Novem:  "The Chinese companies are interested in purchasing licences, upgrading
their technology, and examining the possibilities for cooperation and joint ventures
with Europeans. The products they will be exhibiting are intended mainly to arouse
the interest of companies looking for further cooperation."

Other features of Sustain 2001 include an Asia workshop, where practical information
will be offered to companies focusing on the Asian market, and Green Energy Marketing
Lectures for those involved in selling green energy and implementing new sales systems
and techniques in utilities.  An International Innovation Award will be given in several
categories for the most innovative products and services displayed at Sustain 2001.

On 9 and 10 May will also be held the CHP (Combined Heat Power) symposium, at which
the USA and Europe will meet each other in the field of Combined Heat Power. The sponsors
of CHP include the U.S. Department of Energy, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency,
Cogen Europe and Cogen Netherlands.

The Sustain 2001 exhibition is open to the general public on 8 and 9 May from 9:30 to 17:00
hours, and on 10 May from 9:30 to 16:00 hours.
